Hair transplants 'can be brilliant with a good surgeon'

Hair transplant results can be "brilliant" if the procedure is conducted by a good surgeon, the chairman of the Institute of Trichologists has claimed.

Marilyn Sherlock explained a transplant - which is most commonly used on men who suffer from male pattern hair loss - can stay "for life" if done properly.

She noted the operation is much more likely to be a success if the individual still has hair on the rear of their head, as if hair is thinning here then

"unacceptable" bald patches will form after the procedure.

"If there is good density at the back the transplant surgeon can help enormously and, if done properly, it is beautiful," she said.

Ms Sherlock advised those considering undergoing a hair transplant to check whether the surgeon is registered with the General Medical Council and ask

around for recommendations.

She also suggested paying a visit the Institute of Trichologists to ascertain whether they have a large enough donor site for a surgeon to work from.
